'No War' campaign

The University Student's Union of Jaffna will be celebrating 'Pongu Tamil' later this week with the theme 'No To War'. The celebrations this year seeks to create awareness about peace and the need for normalcy in the North and the East.

Selvaraja Gajendran, head of the university organising committee of the 'Pongu Tamil' programme, told the Sunday Observer that the event being held for the second year in succession will be on a grand scale. "Several institutions have come forward to take part in the event which is expected to highlight the present frame of mind of the people in the north and the east who are not for war and seek a constructive political settlement to the ethnic crisis", Gajendran said.

The event is scheduled to be held at the Jaffna University grounds on June 27, at 3 p.m.

Five senior journalists honoured

The Editor's Guild of Sri Lanka will honour five senior journalists this year with the Long and Distinguished Service Gold Medal Award at its annual Journalism Awards for Excellence ceremony to be held on June 24 at the Mount Lavinia Hotel.

The five distinguished journalists selected for this honour are Mr. Edwin Ariyadasa, Mr. D.F. Kariyakarawana, Mr. Jiffry Yoonus, Ms. Annalukshmi Rajadurai and Mr. Dalton de Silva.

Fourteen Awards and several Merit Certificates will be presented at the Awards Night, the fifth consecutive annual awards presentation,organised by the guild.

This year's ceremony is jointly sponsored by Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL) Wijeya Newspapers, Express Newspapers, United Newspapers and Upali Newspapers together with SriLankan Airlines, Ceylon Tobacco Company Limited, National Savings Bank, People's Bank, National Lotteries Board and the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka, Mount Lavinia Hotel is the host-hotel.

Appeals for help

A. R. Hettige of 172/2, Himbutana, Mulleriyawa New Town, a father of two young kids is suffering from Multiple myeloma and has been referred to the Apollo Specialty Hospital, Chennai, India. Haematologist Dr. Rajesh Kashyap of Apollo Hospital, has recommended him to undergo chaemotherapy with autologus bone marrow transplantation.

The total cost of undergoing chaemotherapy and ABMT will be around SLR 2,000,000 (two million) which he is unable to afford and requests contribution from the generous public and organizations.

Toddler appeals

One-and-a-half-year-old M. Azroon of 47, Arunodaya Mawatha, Obeysekerapura, Rajagiriya, is suffering from Atrial Sepal Defect (ASD).

Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr. A. G. Jayakrishnan recommends immediate heart surgery, which will cost around Rs. 210,000. Parents appeal to well-wishers to contribute to Hatton National Bank, Panchikawatte branch, A/c No. 02-1213001-3.

SL Army to stage grand musical show

Members of regular, volunteer and ex-servicemen of the Sri Lanka Army Ordanance Corps (SLAOC) have made arrangements to stage a grand musical show at the BMICH on July 20 (Sunday) at 6.30 p.m. in aid of the welfare activities of the members and their families.

The proposed welfare activities to the members include financial assistance for surgery, hospitalisation and self-employment to widows, higher education for children and provision of spectacles, hearing aids and other medical accessories, Brigadier J. P. A. Jayawardena, President of the Army Ordnance Corps Association said at a press conference held at the Base Ordnance Depot, Tripoli Road, Colombo recently.

PM off to UK

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will leave for Great Britain on an official visit today.

He is expected to be away for a week, and will meet the British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

SLFP's new political vision today

Introducing a new political vision will be the theme at the 14th Party Conference of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) which will be held at the Sangabodhi Vidyalaya, Nittambuwa at 2.00 p.m. today. Several amendments will be made to the SLFP constitution. President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga is scheduled to make a statement on the party policy regarding the present political, economic, social and ethic problems of the country. Under proposed new amendments, the SLFP members of the Provincial Councils and the local bodies will be entitled to membership of the SLFP. A floral tribute to Bandaranaike 'Samadhiya' will be held at 10 a.m. and the election of office-bearers to the Executive Council will be held at 11 a.m.

US warship in port

An anti-missile carrier of the US Navy, O Kanne docked at the Colombo Harbour, the US embassy in Colombo announced.

The warship carrying 350 naval personnel based at the Pearl Harbour, is commanded by Commander Michael S. Villand.
