Police capable of giving Kandy a good run

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN - Kandy Sports Corr

Kandy Sports Club who are the only unbeaten team in the current Caltex Rugby League 'A' Division tournament take on Police Sports Club in their league match to be played at Nittawela today June 22 (Sunday).

Kandy Sports Club in such spanking form in scoring points that they have reached the 600 points mark in 7 games averaging a little under 90 points per match which is good going indeed considering the fact that their last three outings had been against tougher opponents than the ones they encountered earlier this season.

Kandy's back division showed a lot of thrust and ran the ball well with winger Radhika Hettiarachchi running two brilliant tries and young Dhanushka Pushpakumara also playing on the wing showed plenty of speed to score three tries. Full back Nalaka Weerakkody caught the CH defence napping by executing two drop goals and narrowly missed a third one in their grand 35-13 win over CH & FC.

Kandy possibly have the best 'Eight' in clubs this season with almost all of them being national players and some of them being left out in the bench as only eight could play and they come as substitution during the game. They should enjoy possession both in the line outs through high jumping Pradeep Basnayake, Asoka Jayasena and young Neranjan Ranasinghe and in the scrums and in the loose.

Policemen have also enjoyed a good amount of success winning five of the seven games they have played so far and are lying sixth in the table, and just around six points separated the teams between the second and sixth position. Therefore the cops could stage an 'arrest of the Kandyans' if they could only get their acts together as they did in the second half of their match against CR & FC last week.

KANDY SC Jeeva Galgamuwa, Malith Silva, Ansar Buksh, Saranath Hettiarachchi, Pradeep Basnayake, Asoka Jayasena, Dilip Selvam, Sean Wijesinghe, Tulaga Tavita, Amjad Buksh and Sajith Mallikarachchi (Captain), Radhika Hettiarachchi, Indrajith Bandaranayake, Ifeta Tema, Dhanushka Pushpakumara, Nalaka Weerakkody, Duminda Pullikuttiarachchi, Neranjan Ranasinghe, Kavinda Jayasena, Kapila Silva, Nilfer Ibrahim, Pradeep Liyanage, Dunstan de Silva, Chaminda Yapa, Udaya Hettiarachchi.
