S. Thomas' regain Canon de Saram, Shield beating Trinity 27/10

by RANJAN ANANDAPPA

S.Thomas' regained the Canon R. S. de. Saram shield when they completely overhauled Trinity recording a 27 points( Two goals ,two tries and a penalty) to 10 (a goal and penalty) win in their inter-school rugger match played at Longden Place yesterday.

Trinity gave one of their worst displays this season as they were completely outplayed almost for the entire duration of the game except for few moment in the dying stages when they showed glimpses of their fluency scoring a try when full back Saliya Kumara pierced the Thomian defence to touch down under the post.Kumara himself put over the conversion.

The Thomians continued to unleash their offensive during the good part of the match making repeated forays into the Trinity territory and Trinity wilted under pressure and had the Thomians leading at the breather 15-3.

Nothing went right for the Trinitians and at times they seemed to have forgotten their basics. Their ball handling was poor, they lacked co-ordination and at times their game plan seemed to be in complete disarray. The Thomians with a heavy pack and an impressive back division rattled their opponents and were heading towards a massive scoring spree.

The Thomian skipper and flanker Ashean Karthelis gave the finishing touches in style to some moves as he went on to plant three of the four tries which came their way.Karthelis produced a fine forty meter run to score under the post which Wasim Thajudeen gave them the extra points. Isuru Fernando in addition of scoring a try put over a conversion.

Prior to the commencement of the match the two teams were introduced to the chief guest old Thomian Nihal Samarasinghe. The S.Thomas ' College band played the college anthems of both schools. Last night a reception and a gala dinner was hosted for both teams and principals by the Thomians at the Old Thomian Swimming Club to keep alive the rich tradition maintained by both schools.
