Pictures speak thousand words
The result of a worldwide annual contest on press photography, the exhibition is one of a kind showpiece, which travels around the world every year, reminding us of events significant and innocuous funny and evocative poignant and painful, that had us spellbound last year. Each year, an independent international jury, consisting of thirteen members, judge the entries (in nine different categories), submitted by photojournalists, agencies, newspapers and magazines from all corners of the world. This year's competition attracted 3,910 photographers from 118 countries. In total 69 per cent of the 53,597 submitted images were entered in digitized format (in 2002 it was 55,7 in 2001 27.5%) indicating the rapid transformation into the digital era. The annual exhibition is visits to about 80 venues in 40 countries all over the world, subject to the condition that all prize winning entries are exhibited without any form of censorship.
The fact that hundreds of thousands of visitors around the globe will view this exhibition bears out the power of the photograph to transcend culture and linguistic frontiers. The World Press Photo Foundation is an independent platform or international press photography, founded in 1955. This platform manifests itself in the annual World Press Photography Photo context and the corresponding year book and exhibition. World Press Photo is sponsored worldwide by Canon, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and TPG global mail, express and logistics.
