Raja Bhavana now on Rupavahini

Producer and Director of Raja Bhavana - Bertram Nihal

"Comedies should be humorous. The viewers do not like to watch scenes on weeping and screaming in a comedy series. But through a comedy, indirectly you could criticise social injustice or the unruly behaviour of individuals and social stigmas says TV producer Bertram Nihal.

Bertram stepped into Lake House, last week to talk about his latest comedy series "Raja Bhavana" which is now being telecast over Rupavahini on Fridays at 7.30pm.

He firmly believes that when it comes to television or cinema, comedy should give priority to character and not dialogue." Charlie Chaplin is the best example, he pointed out. He was the main figure in the silent movies made then. Dialogue is used to make humour in the comedy series broadcast over radio. But today what is happening here is, there are more vulgar words in comedy series than highlighting the character on television".

Paul Gauguin, French painter was born in 1848 and died in 1903 in Marquesas Islands.

He was educated at Orleans and Paris Boarding School and served as a Seaman in the Merchant Navy and French Navy. He emerged as a stockbroker in Paris in 1871, and during this period, he got married to Mitte Sophie Gad, a Danish girl.

While serving in the capacity of a stockbroker, he was following classes in drawing and painting, and developed a friendship with Pissaro, his contemporary, who introduced Gauguin to the Impressionist Group which brought about a significant change in his life. And, in 1883, he quits the lucrative job to devote the rest of his life for painting. From 1880-1886 he regularly contributed to the last impressionist exhibitions.

Gauguin was hostile to the European civilisation disillusioned with the western society. He abandoned his family and, in 1891, departed to Tahiti, in South Sea, the world he was searching for, and experienced bitter years of continuous struggle combined with loneliness despair and illness.Gauguin developed a tremendous longing for the primitive which dominated his whole career. His love of the primitive, desire to become savage, to escape from civilisation and the society was reflected in his creations.

His new found freedom had given a multifaceted dimension to the world art scene of the modern world.
