25 belles vie for two crowns

by Jayanthi Liyanage

Being quick-witted in speech, possessing charm and personality were the call of the day. That beauty of a person consisted of more than a pretty face and a shapely figure was obvious during the viva sessions at Trans Asia Hotel, to select the 25 contestants who will vie for the two crowns, Miss Sri Lanka for Miss International 2003 and Miss Sri Lanka for Miss Tourism International 2003 on September 13.

The young hopefuls, selected by a seven-member Board of judges through the medium of an interview to grill the confidence and the speaking ability of the contestants in the language they preferred, will be trained by Usha Jayawardena, an experienced choreographer who spearheads the professional team of executive committee members organizing the pageants.

Families and friends of the contestants, gathered at the venue, joined in the tea and refreshments provided by Russell's Tea, a sponsor of the pageants.

The selected 25 contestants have several mini-pageants to look forward to, before they participate in the glittering beauty pageant, followed by a dinner-dance, to be held at the Trans Asia Hotel. The contestant who wins the title Miss Sri Lanka for Miss International will fly to Japan to take part in Miss International pageant while the one who wins the title Miss Tourism International will join the 60 beauty queens flying here from all over the world to take part in the Miss Tourism International pageant.

Sebastian Perera, franchise director of Miss International and Miss Tourism International and Chairman, Organising Committee, said the committee received a fair amount of applications from provincial beauty aspirants in response to the coupons published in the newspapers of Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd. (ANCL) which is the print media sponsor for the pageants, with Rupavahini as the electronic media sponsor. Those who were not selected would have the opportunity of being considered for about ten other beauty pageants for which Perera is the franchise director.

The judges were Sebastian Perera, Usha Jaywardena, Jackie Perera-Director-Celsin Ltd., Dhammika Gunasekera-General Manager-Jet Asia, Shirley Ganegoda-Chairman-Mt. Royal Group, Naleeni Jaywardena and Swarna Muhandiramge. Bakthi Panditharatne will be the dress designer for both pageants. "The contestants will receive their casual wear and the swim suit free, with a returnable evening dress also being provided," said the franchise director. The saree for the national costume parade will have to be furnished by the contestants.
