A penchant for Latin

Enjoying himself playing an exciting repertoire of sambas, rumbas, flamencos and Neopolitan songs at two South American restaurants in Melbourne is acoustic guitarist Warren Wickremasooriya who was back home recently to rapport with his family. No stranger to the music scene here, especially in the western classical field, Warren was a cellist in the Youth Orchestra and is now following extended studies at Monash Uni in the art of teaching music.

"When I left Sri Lanka two years ago it was to study composition and film scoring at the Boxhill Conservatoire in Melbourne, where I gained a diploma after a two year course of studies. I've written instrumental arrangements for guitar and two voices - classical pieces, and arrangements for hymns and sacred music. As a member of the Australian Music Teachers Register, I taught at the Institute of Balaclava. But I prefer performing, it is soul satisfying," comments a friendly Warren.

He learnt the ABC of guitar playing from his father Nethaji, well-known as a tutor in guitar, and is preparing for a Bachelor Degree in teaching music at Monash. A record of Julian Breem triggered the deep interest in guitar in Warren who draws influences from a mix of Bach and Renaissance music, Django Reinhardt and Joe Pass. John McLaughlin, Segovia and Paco Pena he classifies as heroes.

"I perform solo at the two South American restaurants during the weekend - Fridays, Saturday and Sundays and I enjoy myself playing the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joa Pernambuco, Kenny Dorham, the Gypsy Kings, Flamencos and the traditional and Neopolitan songs.

I had a combo - guitar, congas, voice and double bass - but organising rehearsals was quite a hassle so I stayed with solo performances. On and off I introduce the flute of Linda Mc Ardle - I play with her at corporate functions. And I keep in touch with classical music playing with a Baroque ensemble" concludes Warren, who hopes to be back in December and when he returns after completing his studies, he will move into teaching music.
