Yes, now Sri Lanka has its own 18 hole Mini Golf Course that keeps up to the standards of Mini Golf courses around the world. Although Mini Golf was introduced to Sri Lanka recently, Americans, English, Australians and Europeans have been playing Mini Golf since the 1920s. Those of you who have not played Mini Golf before must be wondering what Mini Golf is. Is it golf in miniature? Is it like the practice putting greens found in golf courses? No, it is not, say the initiators of this new recreation, Shamin and Landani Senaweera. Mini Golf is NOT regulation golf (orthodox golf) in miniature. Mini Golf is a sport of its own. However, it shares certain similarities with regulation golf, as it draws its roots from it. Sixty per cent of the game of regulation golf is putting. In Mini Golf, one hundred per cent of the game is putting; therefore, only one type of club is used, which is called the putter. Unlike Mini Golf, regulation golf uses several types of clubs to finish the course. The Mini Golf Course consists of eighteen holes in varying shapes and sizes. Each green has been designed to reward accurate putting and consists of a variety of interesting and colourful obstacles that make putting fun and challenging for adults and kids alike.
In the US and throughout mainland Europe, Mini golf has for many years been classed as a competitive sport. Players compete in televised international tournaments for prize money up to US $100,000. The World Mini Golf Sports Federation organizes World and European championships in alternate years. Thanks to the Mini Golf Course in Ethul Kotte local players can now participate in these tournaments, say the organisers. Since the Mini Golf Course is open until 10 pm every day, it gives people a chance to get outside and get a little exercise even at night after work. Another advantage of mini golf is that it is one of the few recreational activities where parents and their kids can participate together giving new meaning to "quality time". It allows parents to interact with children while enjoying a challenging game.
You do not need any prior knowledge of golf or training in regulation golf to play Mini Golf. Shamin and Landani Senaweera will be happy to answer any questions you may have on Tel. No. 074 405 910 or 0777 489 508. Those of you who have not played Mini Golf before can find out how much fun it can be. |
