SL credit card gang nabbed in London by Reggie Fernando our London Corr. The Tamil Taskforce set up by Scotland Yard recently to fight escalating violence and crime among Sri Lankan Tamil gangs here nabbed a group last Thursday (July 24) said to be behind a cleverly organised 6 million pounds sterling (Rs. 600 million) credit card fraud. According to Scotland Yard, the fraudsters - all Sri Lankans employed in fried chicken outlets around North-West London had 'manufactured' hundreds of fake credit cards to access almost one hundred bank accounts to rob millions of sterling pounds within a matter of three-and-a-half months. Among the arrested were a husband and wife and four men from Wembley, Colindale and Edgware areas North West of London - all owners of fast food restaurants. They were bailed out on Friday, July 25. Speaking to the Sunday Observer Detective Inspector Bob Gurr who directed the raids carried out by officers from the Dedicated Cheque and Plastic Crime Unit explained: "We believe we have disrupted a highly organised team of individuals who were deceiving banks of vast quantities of money. We are determined to make life impossible for this type of criminals" Police also stated that the Tamil Taskforce came into being after three murders were committed within the past seven months. |
