PM tells farmers to discard old methods by Ariyaratna Ganegoda Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe addressing "Govi Hamuwa" a farmers' rally at Magalle, Nikeweratiya yesterday said that the farmers themselves would be able to decide on water resources management in future when a new Act on Irrigation Authority is presented in Parliament. The PM said that the new Act would provide relief to farmers. He also remarked that there was a surplus of paddy in the area and that steps would be taken to avoid such a situation in the future. With the commencement of the peace process, production of paddy in the north east has increased tremendously he said amusing that steps would be taken to export paddy to other countries. "This task has been entrusted to Irrigation and Samurdhi Minister S.B. Dissanayake and the Trade and Commerce Minister, Ravi Karunanayake", said urging farmers to discard old methods of production and employ new techniques such as re-planting and seed production. The government would provide all assistance to farmers in this regard. The committee appointed to reduce the cost of living is already looking into several proposals, he added. The Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was accompanied by Minister Rohitha Bogollagama and Gamini Jayawickreme Perera. |
