Non - academic staff threaten TU action By ANJANA GAMAGE Non-academic staffers of all universities have threatened to go for trade union action from August 3, if their demands were not met by the University Grants Commission (UGC) within the next seven days, Chairman of the Inter University Trade Unions Federation Lionel Malwattage warned. Academic activities in all universities crippled on July 17 when the non-academic staff staged a token strike demanding, among other things a pay hike and enhancement of their monthly allowances. " We had a meeting with the Chairman of the UGC on July 21, but so far nothing has happened" Malwattage said explaining that the collective agreement between the university authorities and the inter university trade unions, stipulated a salary increment every three years. Malwattage alleged that increment had not come into effect since 1995. He also said the non-academic staff had several other grievances as well and warned that if the demands were not met, they would resort to action. A spokesman for the Ministry of Tertiary Education and Training said the ministry has already taken steps to redress most of the demands. He said the demands for a salary increment will be sorted out along with the salary increment of all state employees proposed by the UNF government recently. |
