by Chamikara Weerasinghe

The Airport Unit of Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, has earned an income of over Rs. 1 billion for the month of May from migrant workers.

SLBFE Chairman Susantha Fernando said that this was the first time that its unit had recorded such a big income, and it was mainly due to the effective steps taken by the government in providing a smooth service with better facilities for migrant workers by eliminating red tape.

Chairman Fernando said that the annual revenue of its unit had increased from Rs. 492,420,000 in May 2002 to Rs. 1,014,780,000 in May, 2003. "Its income in 2001 was Rs. 4,504,710,000 and Rs. 6,984,328,000 in 2002, which was a substantial increase.

The bureau has been making good headway in terms of income generation at the airport, and this way why it was able to earn an income of Rs. 4,949,381,000 during the last six months for this year alone," he said. "There has been a significant increase in the number of migrant workers who have sought jobs after registering with the bureau's airport unit," he added.
