PM to visit China Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will undertake an official visit to China on August 8 to preside over a Sri Lanka-China business and investment seminar organised by the China Council for the promotion of international trade. During the five-day visit the PM will be finalising five major agreements with the Peoples' Republic of China, aimed at strengthening the country's economy and encouraging the Chinese investments in Sri Lanka. Sl ICRC officer's funeral today The body of Nadeesha Yasasiri Ranmuthu, (37) the Information Technology Technician killed in Iraq while serving the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) was flown home on Friday. Ranmuthu was shot dead while on his way to the Baghdad airport on July 22 to board a flight to come home after completing his assignment. The Iraqi driver was injured. Ranmuthu had been in Iraq from April to instal a communication network in the ICRC office and to train other personnel. His remains were taken to his residence at Maharagama and the cremation will take place today. PM to brief business leaders again Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will be having a second round of talks with business leaders of Sri Lanka on July 31, as part of his pledge for a sound macro economic development at the Tokyo donor conference. This was revealed by Cabinet Spokesman, Prof. G.L. Peiris, who said the PM's request for local business representatives to create more job opportunities, had already brought a positive response. The Cabinet Economic Committee will also participate at the July 31 meeting, Prof. Peiris said. Former Daily News journalist dies Veteran journalist and one-time Chief Sub Editor of the Daily News, Hugh Abeyratne, passed away on Thursday after a brief illness. Mr. Abeyratne served the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL) for over 20 years before moving on to work in other news magazines. He was the first Asian journalist to gain the Diploma in Journalism with a Distinction from the prestigious Thompson Foundation, UK. He has contributed articles to various newspapers and magazines after his retirement. His wife Dorothy pre-deceased him. He leaves a son and three daughters. The funeral took place at the Colombo General Cemetery, Borella on Friday. 'Kata Handa' awards Ten veteran announcers and intellectuals from the electronic media will be felicitated by the 'Kata Handa' Media Foundation on August 02 at the Elphinstone Theatre, Maradana at 6.00 p.m. under the patronage of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Minister, Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku. Felicitation awards will be presented to those who had rendered invaluable service for the development of the electronic media in Sri Lanka. Among those receiving 'Kata Handa' felicitation awards will be Ariyadasa Pieris, Praba Ranatunga, Palitha Perera, Dr. Nandana Karunanayaka, Berty Galahitiyawa, Dr. Vijaya Corea, Nanda Jayamanna, Newton Gunaratne, Sumana Jayatilake and Gemunu Wijesooriya. Students who have successfully completed an announcing course conducted by the 'Kata Handa' Media Foundation will also receive certificates at the ceremony which will be followed by a musical show. |
