Army deserters should report to Gampaha Kachcheri by RAMANI KANGARAARACHCHI All Army deserters in Gampaha district should report at the Gampaha Kachcheri to get their discharge certificates from August 12. This was revealed at a meeting chaired by K.W.T. Karaliyadda, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Defence, held at the Ministry on Friday to discuss the pilot project to issue discharge certificates to Army deserters in Gampaha district. Newspaper advertisements in this regard will be published in the first week of next month. Adjutant General of the Army, Major General Ivan Dasanayake, Director, Personnel, Brigadier Janmika Liyanage, Director, Pay and Records, Brigadier Siri Ranaweera and Director, Legal, Brigadier Mohanthi Pieris participated at this conference. Additional GA for Gampaha U.K. Gunawardana was also present. The Army has identified 5000 Army personnel from the district as deserters but of them only 2096 are eligible for the discharge certificate as the rest have not completed three years of service. An estimated Rs 3.million is expected to be recovered from those seeking discharge certificates. According to informed Army sources, this includes housing loans ,festival and salary advance availed by these Army personnel and other losses to Army property. Major General Ivan Dasanayake said, that arrangements have been made to issue discharge certificates to the 2096 soldiers after recovering the dues through the AGAs. The discharge certificates program applicable only to those with more than three years of service will, however, offer those with less than that period, the option of returning to their respective regiments, to either continue with their service or submit their resignation through the regiment. |
