Gun recovered from car dealer

An investigation has been launched into the discovery of a 16 mm gun with some spent ammunition at a residence of a wealthy car dealer in Bandarawela last Thursday, police sources said.

Acting on a tip off, a police party led by Inspector D.B.A. Kalansooriya from the Uva Vice Squad, searched his house at Bindunuwewa and recovered the 16 mm gun.

The suspect told police that he found the gun abandoned in a shrub jungle when he visited Jaffna some time ago.

However, the police are checking whether the gun was stolen from the armed forces or from the Special Task Force (STF). Police say it is an offence to posses a gun without a vilad permit. The suspect is to be produced before the Bandarawela Magistrate.

The Uva Central Range Vice Squad functions under DIG Uva Range, S. Shankar.
