Moe spearheads CH fine 69/17 win over Army

by LAL GUNESEKERA

CH & FC pounded the Army front lines with a heavy barrage of 'artillery shells' to demolish them by 69 points (7 goals, 4 tries) to 17 (1 goal, 2 tries) after leading 36-10 at half time in their second round Caltex 'A' Division League Rugby Championship match at Maitland Crescent yesterday. CH won the first round game too 29-28 at Galle Face.

Army just had no answer to bring down CH's Samoan flanker, Fred Moe the "Gentle Giant" standing over six feet. He just used his weight to plant four tries out of the seven in the first half itself, before he was replaced by fijian Kinijoji Rakata in the second. Centre Alex Talia the second Samoan too was replaced in the second session by Fijian jim Bolakoro who scored one try, while Rakata planted the other three.

CH moved the ball in gay abandon and this was the best display of running rugby I have seen so far this season as they looked the only side that is capable of giving the defending champions Kandy Sports Club a run for their money when they meet each other at Maitland Crescent on August 9. Kandy are yet unbeaten to head the points table, while CH are lying second, losing only to Kandy in the first round and drawing their game with Havelocks (25-all) last week.

After Saranga Jayakody had fluffed a simple 22-metre penalty for CH in the fourth minute, they went ahead three minutes later with Moe touching down under the posts off a second phase move. Jayakody obliged with the conversion and CH led 7-0. Army reduced the deficit two minutes later with their Kenyan centre Ian Simiyu scoring mid-right after a CH defender had fumbled with the ball. Surprisingly T. A. Silva missed the conversion (5-7). In the 15th minute it was Moe again. This time off a line-out he scored a peach of a try near the left corner flag, but Nalin Dissanayake failed with the conversion (CH 12-5). Seven minutes later, off a five-metre short-tap Moe again scored under the posts for Dissanayake to add the extra points (CH 19-5).

Right winger Dinesh Kumara then scored for CH in the 28th minute, but Dissanayake failed with the conversion (CH24-5). Four minutes later, Moe scored his fourth try under the posts and this time Dissanayake obliged with the extra points (CH 31-5). In the 38th minute, left-winger Yuganthara Karunaratne touched down far left, but Dissanayake failed with the conversion (CH 36-5). Just before half time, Army, scored their second try through Kenyan centre Simiyu, but again T. A. Silva failed with the kick (Army 10-36).

After the turn around, CH, looked as if they had slowed down but in the 15th minute the Army's defence was penetrated by Rakata off a five metre short-tap and with Dissanayake failing with the conversion CH led 41-10. Seven minutes later Rakata scored under the posts after a 35-metre run and this time Saranga Jayakody obliged with the kick (CH 48-10). It was Bolakoro next in the 30th minute near the right corner flag and this time Dissanayake made a splendid conversion (CH 55-10). Rakata scored his third try in the 38th minute and with Jayakody converting, CH led 62-10. Army reduced the lead in the 40th minute through a penalty try converted by Kapila Knowlton (17-62) and Bolakoro final nail in Army's coffin and with Jayakody converting CH had won 69-17.
