Big money to be won in ANCL sponsored SLPA Cycle Race

Over 150 riders will compete in the men's open SLPA Cycle Race 2003, covering a distance of 330 kilometres in connection with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority's 24th Anniversary Celebrations on August 1 and 2.

The cycle race is sponsored by Sunday Observer, Daily News, Silumina, Dinamina, Kreeda (ANCL Publications) together with Cycling Federation of Sri Lanka and Rupavahini. Event is organised by SLPA and conducted by Interim Committee of Cycling in Sri Lanka.

Parakrama Dissanayake, the Chairman of SLPA, at a press conference held on Thursday at his office, said that Colombo, the hub port of South Asia emerged as the life line of Sri Lanka today and the theme of the SLPA Cycle Race 2003 is to bring peace, unity and harmony among employees, sportsmen, sportswomen and people around the country.

The SLPA chief Dissanayake thanked the sponsors for providing all assistance to make this event a success. Sri Lanka Ports Authority wishes the country's development through peace. He also thanked the Interim Committee of the Cycling Federation of Sri Lanka for extending fullest support and co-operation in conducting the cycle race.

Everybody is aware that SLPA has made great strides in the field of sports. There are several national players in different fields of sports in the SLPA and it is a great honour to organise this event.

All leading men cyclists are expected to participate and there will be handsome cash awards and glittering challenge trophy to be won. The SLPA chief also announced that they hope to make this cycle race an annual event. The 'first leg' will be 203.6 kilo metres, starting on August 1 at 7.00 a.m. in front of the Light House, Colombo Port and the cyclists will proceed through Galle Road via Mt. Lavinia, Moratuwa, Kalutara, Ambalangoda, Galle to Matara and turn off at Matara towards Galle and finishing point in front of Galle Port.

The 'second leg' (of 127.6 kilo metres) will be on August 2 starting in front of Galle Port at 12 noon and the riders will go through Galle Road, Bambalapitiya, Thummula Junction, Borella, Baseline Road, Peliyagoda Roundabout and finish at Hettiyawaththa Junction, Colombo 13. (Jaya Terminal gate, Colombo Port).

All applications to compete will close on July 28 with Susil Ranasinghe, Secretary, SLPA Sports Club, SLPA, Colombo 1. (Tel. 323005 - 482753).

The overall winner will receive the handsome challenge trophy and Rs. 50,000, second place Rs. 30,000, third Rs. 20,000, fourth Rs. 10,000 fifth Rs. 5,000, sixth to tenth Rs. 2,000 each and eleventh to fifteenth Rs. 1,000 each.

The prize money for first stage winners - first Rs. 5,000, second Rs. 4,000, third Rs. 3,000, fourth Rs. 2,000 and fifth Rs. 1,000.

The prize money for second stage winners will be same as the first stage.

In addition, every rider finishing stage one (Colombo - Matara - Galle) will receive a 'T' shirt and a cap.

The riders registration will be between 5.30 a.m. to 6.30 a.m. on August 1. Accommodation and meal allowance will be provided by the SLPA for first leg (Galle).

All the managers of the riders should be present at the managers' meeting on July 31 at the SLPA Sports Club, Colombo. (Opp. Khan Clock Tower) at 5.30 p.m.
