Bahudeen scores all points in Royal's 17/6 win over S. Thomas' by Ranjan Anandappa It was double celebration time for Royal when they beat traditional rivals S. Thomas' 17 points (a try and four penalties) to 6 (two penalties) to record a hat-trick of wins in the series to retain the Michael Gunaratne Trophy and the win also put them on top billing in the 'Milo' League Championship at Havelock Park yesterday. After an evenly fought first half where the Thomians led by two penalties to one, Royal produced an exhilarating second half as the Thomians were sent off their rhythm. It was a compelling forwards battle in the first half as both sides gave nothing away. After the short whistle, Royal got their act together as their forwards reigned supreme, driving into rucks and mauls. They were well supported by the back division. The Thomian forwards lost their robust style of play and they went more for the man rather than the ball. The Thomian skipper Karthelis and 'prop' Isuru Fernando were sent off the field for deliberately kicking the opponents. Royal forwards spearheaded by Danushaka Rajapakse, flanker Rashid, No. 8, Prabath Udugampola and second rower Jiffrey played tirelessly but it was fullback Shehab Bahudeen who stole the limelight. He missed a couple of penalties in both halves but came back strongly to provide the match winning platform for Royal. He covered good ground to score the first try for his team and contributed immensely towards Royal's success by collecting all 17 points. Isuru Fernando and Thajudeen put over the penalties for the Thomians. Rohan Nishantha refereed. Royal won the junior game 18-10 to take the Thambipillai Trophy. |
