Kandy overall champs at Central Province sports festival by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy sports corr Kandy District became overall champions at the Central Province Sports Festival organised by the Ministry of Sports of the Central Province and worked off at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy. Kandy district aggregated 251 points while the runner-up Matale district could manage only 90 points. Nuwara Eliya finished third with 61 points. Sports in the Central Province was dominated by Kandy district to such an extent by Central Province that they won 20 out of the 27 team championship. Nuwara Eliya had 4 team wins and Matale district just 3 team wins. Kandy district's team game wins were in men's elle, kabbadi (men), netball, women softball cricket, hockey (women), soccer (men and women), table tennis (men and women), Badminton (men and women) karate (men), wrestling, judo (men and women), weight lifting, swimming (men and women), athletics (men and women). Nuwara Eliya district won the team championship in volleyball (men and women), kabbadi (women), softball cricket (men). Matale's three team championship were in elle (women), hockey (men) and karate (women). Minister of Education of the Central Province V. Radhakrishnan was the chief guest at the closing ceremony. Minister of Sports, Health and Child Care of the Central Province Saliya Dissanayake was the chief guest at the opening ceremony and the awards were distributed by them. |
