Prathiba emerges girls chess champ Y. Prathiba (8.5) clinched the girls title while young Galle boy Dimuthu Priyadarshana (5.5) held Sri Lankan hopes in the 26th Asian Junior Chess Championships at Camelot Beach Hotel, Negombo, on Friday. Magesh Chandran and S. Poobesh Anand (points) led the Boys section after the penultimate round. Dimuthu Priyadarshana defeated another Sri Lankan boy Taamara de Silva in an interesting game, arising from the Center Counter Gambit and the game lasted 49 moves. Thilina Chandrasiri from Ananda College, Colombo played an interesting game to out highly rated Iranian player Akbarina Syed in a Sicilian Rossolimo game. It is the biggest upset for this round and places Thilina in a good position to obtain the International rating. Thilina now has 5.0 points. In girls section two Sri Lankans viz. Harshani Konara, and Liyanegedara Ayodya with 5.5 points had the chances of finish higher with one round remaining. Harshani Konara played the Petroff defence and had an equal position after the first time control. In the ensuing knight versus bishop and pawn ending, she missed a possible draw against the current Asian Under 14 Champion J. Rajasuriya and lost in 60 moves. Round 10 Results (Boys): S. Arun Prasad (7.0) drew P. Magesh Chandran (7.5), P. Mokal (7.0) drew S. Poobesh Anand (7.5), Nguyen Ngoc Son (7.0) beat Abjijit Gupta (6.0), Deepan C (7.0) beat A. Kore (6.0), Sengupta Deep (6.0) beat Dimuthu Priyadarshana (5.5), G. Rohit (5.0) beat I. T. Palawatta (5.0). Round 10 Results (Girls): J. E. Kavitha (7.0) drew Y. Prathiba (8.5), J. Rajasurya (7.0) beat Krultika Nadig (6.0), Mary Ann Gomes (5.5) lost to Saheli Nath (7.0), Mahima R. (6.5) beat Tania Sachdev (5.5), D. Harika (6.0) beat Umesha B.D. (4.5), Ayodya L (5.5) beat Kathryn Ann Cruz (5.0), Harshani Konara (5.5) beat D. Rushani (4.0). |
