Desmond for Hope
Creative i (Pvt) Limited, the organisers of "Desmond Live in Concert - a 40 year celebration" the sell out mega event held at the BMICH recently handed over a cheque from the proceeds of the concert as a donation towards the Hope Hospital Project at the request of Maestro Desmond de Silva. SriLankan Airlines who sponsored Desmonds air travel to Sri Lanka for the concert facilitated this donation. Desmond who readily agreed to act as an "Ambassador" to promote the Hope Project spoke from his heart when he made an appeal from the stage to his fans. Desmond also undertook to promote the project when he performs in UK, USA and Australia later this year. Desmond and his wife Lala were the guests of Mr. & Mrs. Ana Thevathasan at the Hope Charity Ball held in the UK recently. The Hope Charity Ball was organised by a UK based charity called Hope, which raises funds to help countries in need. On this occasion the country selected for aid was Sri Lanka and funds were for the victims of the recent floods. The black tie evening attended by over 300 persons (mostly English) was hosted at the Shenley Cricket Centre by the Sri Lankan owner of the Cricket Complex Mr. Glucka Wijesooriya. Various articles of cricket memorabilia were auctioned and over Sterling Pounds 8000 (SLR 1.28 million) was raised towards the cause. Desmond politely declined many requests to sing as it was an evening out for him and as it was not his regular band who were in attendance that evening. But Des delighted the audience when Sri Lankan Tycoon Francis Silva made him an offer he could not refuse! Francis promised to donate Sterling Pounds 500 the equivalent of 80,000.00 Sri Lankan rupees towards the Flood Relief Fund if Desmonds sang one song for him. Desmond did sing with the band of Englishmen and the song was "La Bamba"! well done Desmond!.... and equally well done Francis. |
