Lanka's human resources commended

Sri Lanka has tremendous potential for business and investment due to its highly educated and intelligent pool of human resources, said Executive Vice President, Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency, Motomichi Ikawa.

He said the country's strategic location and its educated human resources will give a big impetus to register more than a 10 per cent growth. Ikawa made these comments at the Business Convention 2003 organised by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce under the theme 'Regaining Sri Lanka and Beyond' last week.

He said many people around the world have marvelled at the ability of the Sri Lankan business community to quickly adapt to difficult situations.

"With the peace dividend, Sri Lanka can achieve all its economic barriers in double quick time," said Ikawa.

He also said: "We are amazed by the quickness of Sri Lankan employees to learn the Japanese language, which contributed to the artistic delivery of manufacturing products in Japanese factories".

Through the Free Trade Agreement with India, Sri Lanka is also a gateway to the vast Indian market, and can reap benefits if economic fundamentals such as infrastructure are in place.

He said conflict-affected economies naturally need high levels of investment to rehabilitate the infrastructure to face future challenges.

Chairman, Banyan Tree Group, Ho Kwon Ping, in a presentation on 'Singapore Development Experience', said a third chance may never come for Sri Lanka if the nation misses the current opportunity with the peace process.

He said the peace dividend will bring substantial growth, but will be shortlived unless the leaders identify a sustainable role for Sri Lanka in a rapidly changing world economy. (HS)
