Women entrepreneurs to be felicitated tomorrow

The 'Woman Entrepreneur of the Year and Professional Woman of the Year 2002' awards ceremony, organised by the Women's Chamber of Industry and Commerce (WCIC), will be held on October 20 at the Colombo Hilton. The chief guest will be Minister of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion, Professor G.L. Peiris.

The event is held every two years to recognise women who have successfully set up their own enterprises. The WCIC will also felicitate members who have won prestigious international awards at the event, said WCIC Chairperson, Indira Senanayake Kulathilaka.

The winners will be selected from the categories of Large, Small, Medium and Micro and Gold, Silver and Bronze trophies and medals will be awarded. An award will also be given to the outstanding professional woman, Kulathilaka said.

"The rural sector has given birth to many industries. The talents of rural women are now being tapped and opportunities are given to them to prove their talent. The WCIC will particularly recognise the micro category," she added.

The WCIC was established in March 1985. Its priority is to link together women who own and operate businesses and promote close networking among women.

Through the Business Clinic which is now in operation, a panel from the Board of Members will advise and assist women to start up enterprises and facilitate problem solving. The Chamber has also identified the need to improve English specially for school leavers and graduates, by conducting classes in Spoken and Business English. The strategic plan of the WCIC is to set up small and medium entrepreneurship parks to train rural women to set up cottage-based businesses, Kulathilaka said. The vision of the WCIC is to empower women to set up family businesses and pave the way for them to remain in Sri Lanka and better their living standards.

The main sponsors of the awards ceremony are the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd, People's Bank, Ceylinco Insurance and Ramya Apparels while the co-sponsors are the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka, National Savings Bank, SriLankan Airlines and EFI Travels and Tours (Pvt) Ltd.
