TT&SC services greatly in demand by Hiran H. Senewiratne The Textile Training and Services Centre (TT&SC) has received invitations from several countries to set up garment industry-related training institutes and testing laboratories. Countries that have made inquiries in this regard are Vietnam, Nepal, Zanzibar and Pakistan. According to Director TT&SC D.P. Gunawardena, some countries from the Asian region are willing to pay millions for these facilities. The institute is conducting many advanced training programmes related to the garment sector, covering the areas of increased productivity level, quality level and cost effectiveness apart from laboratory testings. TT&SC's training programmes and testing systems conform to all international standards, said Gunawardena. He said that with these facilities, the TT&SC promotes the organisation in other countries. He said the TT&SC has one of the best laboratories in the region. Many leading garment factories get their testing done through this laboratory at a reasonable cost. Gunawardena said the Centre, which started in a small way, is now operating on a commercial basis and has reached self-financing level. It comes under the Ministry of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion. He also hinted that the TT&SC intends to restructure the management to be further efficient. The Centre's professional services are frequently sought by the textile and apparel industry. Currently, many leading international brands such as Mothercare, Nest, Ethel Austin and Tesco have recognised the laboratory, he added. They are also in the process of negotiating with international brands such as Marks and Spencer and Victoria's Secret so that they will also recognise the laboratory. Gunawardena emphasised that a good part of its income comes from laboratory testing. It had been accepted by the world through multilateral agreements with garment exporting countries. He said the Diploma in Textile Technology, conducted by the Institute, has been accredited from the Textile Institute of Manchester, UK. |
