The infamous Donna Lucia

by Farah Macan Markar

Remember that horrendous looking old widow whose even more horrendous behaviour, with her cackling, at times cracking voice, echoing the Bishop's College Auditorium, a few weeks ago.

Yes, I'm talking about the infamous Donna Lucia from Brazil (where the nuts come from), or rather the infamous impersonation of Donna Lucia, Charlie's Aunt. Organised by the past pupil's of Bishop's College, directed by Nafeesa Amurrudin and Clare de Silva, "Charlie's Aunt" kept us in stitches with the ever tangling web, the impersonating aunt-Lord Fancourt Babberly, the plot hatches-the quick thinking Jack and nervous wreck Charlie, the unsuspecting victims and a few suspecting expected unexpected visitors, kept running into.

So just who was that bubbly new face on stage who seemed to have a ball of a time, being a man, dressing up as a woman, leading everyone into a dance? It's forensic scientist wanna be, 18 year old Dominic Ross Kellar, known to his friends as Dom/Domma.

The "Phantom of the Opera" not coming to be (he was supposed to be the leading tenor in the Opera House) "Charlie's Aunt" is Dominic's first main appearance on stage. "Other than this it has just been interhouse school plays for me" says Dom whose also been with the Mary Anne Singers since the age of four.

How did he get into C.A?

"Shanuki de Alwis who was one of the girls in the play, is a friend of mine. She said they needed another guy actor. I had just finished my A's at the time, so I got into the cast" says Dominic who was initially supposed to be Jack, but due to the lack of suitable candidates for a man impersonating a woman, landed with the job of being the blabbering Babberly.

Playing a double role according to Dom is a hard job, especially as Babberly was a character who blundered it out being a woman. "Now if it were me" says Dominic "I'd act out a woman more subtly, play it out properly with sophistication and finish. And definitely not with that hideous gown. I was horrified when I saw it. I mean they could have given me something more beautiful and sexy couldn't they?".

Of getting out there and doing it for the first time, Dom says the second day was more nervous than the first. "The first day was a novel experience. Second time round, after seeing the reactions of the audience to the first, you feel the expectations building.

Also we were constantly reminded on the second day, to pause when the audience laughed, as during the first day we didn't and the audience missed some good lines due to it. I guess the more your on stage, the more you learn".

Of the two directors Dominic says they are poles apart, with different ideas, which meant constant fireworks. "We'd sit back on stage and watch while they argue it out with each other. But they knew what they were doing, and were helpful and understanding to us".

Practises going on for the last three months before the play, and his ridgeback, Lara littering 12 puppies, Dom quit his temporary job at Standard Chartered Bank, due to too much at hand. Not quitting the theatre scene Dominic is presently involved in the English version of the play "Sinhabahu" which will be out for thirty days running in January, in the Punchi Borella Theatre. Dom plays the King, Sinhabahu's mother falls in love with.

Born on February 22nd 1985, Dominic studied at Alethia upto grade 5, then joining Lyceum, in which he did bio, chemistry and physics for his A's.

"I want to be a forensic scientist" he says, adding "I'd love to cut up dead bodies" (???). Dom describes his childhood as very active, being involved in all school sports, debating, singing and interhouse school drama.

Collecting stamps, coins, modifying cars, watching thrillers and comedies are his hobbies. His favourite movie-"Face Off". Favourite actor-"A mixture of Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler". Dom also loves food, and it's a special Mmm... from him for Chinese and Eastern Cuisines.

His trendy outfits are baggy pants, t-shirts and short sleaved shirts, ideal place to hang out-Blitz and he doesn't like gloomy weather.

Dom's biggest influence in life is God. "God has been close to me through my life. His given me the talent to act, and I intend to make the best use of it" he says.

Lastly to be an actor and doc at the same time, have his on family and lead a peaceful life is Dominic's ultimate dream.
