Sinking in to earth with hot stone therapy

By- Umangi de Mel

Spas..the luxurious, splendid and curative. Prayers heal you, time heals you too. And then there's `Stones' that heal you which is as good as any other healing method. Famous all around the world , stones are said to work miracles on the client's mood and it alleviates pains and aches, both physically and psychologically.

The hot stone therapy is the latest and the hottest attraction in the business or rather at the `Spas'. Keeping up with the times, hot and cold stone treatments are pretty popular even among the local spagoers.

According to Soshana Austin, senior Consultant at the `Sanctuary Spa', the pioneer of Spas in Sri Lanka, the stone therapy is all about relaxation and chasing the blues. While claiming to be the first `Spa People' in the country, she says that the Sanctuary Spa has been in existence since June, 2002. "It came to life under three directors, Raj Omprasadhan, Mrs.Omprasadhan and Yohan Peiris."

Hot Stone Therapy

It's a unique experience and a deep healing that enhances you inside out . The healing agent is the smooth `Basalt' stone that's found in volcanic areas of Hawaii and Arisona . "It possesses healing properties and takes the stress away," says Soshana. The hot stone massage uses smooth, heated and cooled stones to relieve muscle stiffness and soreness invoking a deeper sense of relaxation. "The stones are heated in water to 140 degrees," Soshana adds. The exquisite therapy releases the slightest bit of tension.

The water heated `Basalt' stones of varying sizes are kept on the pressure points of the body and are incorporated into massage strokes. "The stones are taken up and down the body front and back. It's deep penetration with each application and each new set of hot stones," she says adding that it's a blend of fluid movement of massage and the comfort and the warmth of the heated stones loosen up the muscles and relaxes the tired body.

It helps-

*Muscular aches and pains

*Poor circulation

*Stress, anxiety and tension

Well, the hot stones aren't the only surprise, according to Soshana the massage makes you feel lighter and buoyant as the burdens are unleashed and you sail into a silent reverie, "By the time you end the massage you're already in a dreamy state," she says. Evidently the guests call the experience as `sinking into the earth' and `feeling cradled by mother earth'.

The two and half hour pampering is coupled with a cooling dip in a cold pool that is filled with rose petals, just to shake you out of the reverie and bring you back to earth.

The stones, they say have a special ability to draw the toxics out of the body, " It's deep penetration massage that includes no hard pressing." The direct heat relaxes muscles and allows manipulation of a greater intensity than the regular massage. "You can even go back to your conference straight away and there's no reason to hesitate or rush around to wash or clean unlike other therapies," Soshana says.
