Rock at its wickedest

Prepare to have the hair on your back stand on end, the blood in your veins freeze, your ears deafened. The shrieks, howls and other chilling sounds that await you on October 25 will make it a "Helloween" you will never forget.

One that will rock the foundation of the pro cart centre at Millennium Park you guessed it, its Rock Saturday with a spine-chilling line-up of bands including the likes of Stigmata, Soul Skinner, Paranoid Earthling, Independent Square, Stone Broke, Whirlwind and the Fallen. Groups whose dynamite performances will haunt you for a long time to come with their rousing showmanship and originality.

Courtesy of Rock Company, October 25 promises to be a no-holds-banned event that will witness some of the weirdest outfits for the occasion, on band members as well as in the audience, with lighting and sound effects to match. Head bangers had better have their heads firmly on their shoulders if they want to get home intact.

This will be a night of sounds to raise the dead.

Album reviews

Staind : 14 Shades of Grey

Staind, having risen from the mid level status of 'Tormented' and 'Dysfunction' proved that maturity is part and parcel of musical growth. Break the Cycle stapled Staind as one of the most important outfits to merge in the revitalized realms of Nu Metal. 14 Shades of Grey is somewhat typical from a band that has tasted a great deal of success commercially and globally.

The boys did touch on a cliche based formula when 'Outside' and 'it's been awhile' hit the top of the world charts. Those who heard the debut track of this new album would have been taken aback by the fierce yet melodically infectious 'Price to play', a potent hit at the music industry as a whole. Well...from there onwards the album makes for very easy listening. 'So Far Away' and 'Layne' make this record accessibly drawing.

There are notable tracks, always maintaining the serious gloom that severs Staind from cookie angst counterparts Slipknot and Linkin Park. 14 Shades of Grey is to say the least one of those albums that you'll occasionally listen to and leave sitting on your CD collection. A fitting title for a rather predictable Rock album. This is very 'grey' but worth your money considering the trash out these days.

Iced Earth : The Dark Saga

Those who are keen followers of Metal for its essence and patriotic value will know that The Underground nestles some of the finest bands musically, lyrically and conceptually. Iced Earth since their inception have climbed the pinnacles of Metal to stand as deities in their own right.

Iced Earth led by the rhythm God Shaffer has earned the crown to many a heart with their genre of passionate music. Iced Earth incorporate a little bit of Thrash, Speed, Death, Progressive, Classical Power Metal to create a blend of some of the heaviest music you'll ever hear and at the same time the band is able to move the shallowest of soul's with powerful ballads. Dark Saga is a very interesting album, a personal favourite of mine and many other true Heavy Metal fans. Dark Saga is a concept album based on the popular violent animation 'Spawn.'

The album begins with a fitting opener 'Dark Saga', opening the flood gates to the superb ballad 'I Died For You' and the album's tone has been set. Musically Dark Saga is not Iced Earth's most complex offering...yet it speaks to the heart, revealing the tale and concept at hand.

Killer tracks like 'Violate' and 'Vengeance is Mine' play a critical role for the damnation and apocalyptic design maintained throughout the aggressive side of Iced Earth. Matt Barlow is one of the most naturally phenomenal vocalists to walk the earth.

His tone, texture and control enables him to display a fine range and bountiful variation that makes him a modern day Vocal God. Very much on the heels of Rob Halford or Bruce Dickinson. 'Dark Saga' is a brilliant album, a true display of what a Metal album should sound like from the beginning to the end.
