Family vital for good values - Family vital for good values

Dr. Stephen R. Covey co-founder/vice chairman of Franklin Covey Company USA best known as the author of the "7 habits of highly effective people" was in Sri Lanka yesterday.

He conducted a full day programme on the theme "Leadership is a choice not a position" as well as a evening programme themed "Leading in Turbulent Times." Dr Covey also took time off to speak to the media. The franchise agreement between Franklin Covey Company and its local arm Dynamix International was also announced on this occasion.

Speaking to the media Dr Covey said "our main focus is on principle centered leadership while skills are secondary. Therefore we always stress on good values and principles and inculcating of moral authority in people to act as change agents in organisations."

"In the whole process the family plays a vital role in creating good values in society as no society will ever survive with the breakup of families," added Dr Covey. He said practice the inside out process switch off TVs get to the habit of reading and studying and sharpen the body and mind physically, mentally spiritually and emotionally.

He cautioned that you cannot create trust if the foundation is built on untrustworthiness be it in the personal life or a corporate. Therefore always trust each other, as it is necessary in team building." Dr. Covey advised everybody to understand the "knowledge worker age" and invest in people as it is a must to face the challenges of the future. They are equipped with a new mind set as well as a new set of skills and are different from the people of the "industrial age", he observed.

His book ranked as a No. 1 Best Seller by New York Times, sold more than 13 million copies and has been translated into 38 languages. He has authored many other books too.
