Medical council raps errant docs

by Shanika Sriyananda

The Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) will take legal action against 59 doctors accused of professional negligence and misconduct. Complaints had been lodged by the public, the Director General of Health Services (DGHS) and the Magistrates' Courts. If these doctors are found guilty they will be blacklisted and their names removed from the medical registry.

The SLMC has also asked the Police to take legal action against doctors practising illegally without registration including an Ayurvedic medical practitioner. According to SLMC regulations, no doctor can practise in the country without registering with the council.

Among 59 complaints, 15 complaints are with affidavits, three from the Magistrates' Courts and two by the DGHS.

The SLMC is also inquiring into an allegation of sexual misconduct by an anaesthetist in Matale who is said to have abused a 45-year-old mother of three, while she was awaiting womb surgery. "Inquiries are going on", said Dr. H.H.R. Samarasinghe, President SLMC adding that it is necessary to make the complaint with an affidavit to proceed with the investigations."Holding an investigation is a time-consuming affair and needs proper data to prove the allegations", he said.
