See-saw game over IGP's post by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE The Constitutional Council is expected to meet again on Monday to discuss the appointment of Inspector General of Police, following the retirement of T.E. Anandarajah last week. It is learnt that the Interior Ministry has forwarded the names of four senior DIGs, T.I. de Silva, Chandra Fernando, Gamini Randeni and Jayatissa Herath to the Constitutional Council to decide on the most suitable candidate to be appointed as the IGP. The Constitutional Council it is learnt is evaluating the seniority of the four DIGs. President, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga last week appointed Senior DIG, T.I. de Silva as the acting Inspector General of Police under powers vested under the constitution. Earlier the Constitutional Council did not endorse the recommendation of the President, to appoint Indra de Silva as IGP on the question of seniority. Sources said that some senior DIGs have filed papers before the Supreme Court to determine their seniority and the matter had been referred to the National Police Commission for a ruling. This was the first occasion where a delay has occurred for more than a week in filling the post of Inspector General of Police. The four senior DIGs, Chandra Fernando, Indra de Silva, Gamini Randeni and Jayatissa Herath including the former IGP, T.E. Anandarajah joined the Police Department as Probationary Assistant Supdt. of Police (ASP) in 1971 and many of them are expected to retire within the next one year. |
