1334 families affected by recent floods by Jayampathy Jayasinghe Around 1334 families in the Divisional Secretariats of Matara, Galle and the Kalutara districts have been affected by the recent floods which destroyed 91 houses while partially damaging 232 others, National Disaster Management Centre's (NDMC) Nimal Hettiarchchi said. The Social Welfare Ministry will allocate Rs. 100,000 for houses completely damaged by the floods and Rs. 40,000 to partially damaged houses. The monies have been allocated for re-construction work through the Divisional Secretariats, Hettiaracahchi explained. Altogether 816 families living in the Grama Nilladari Divisions of Galle, Matara and Kalutara districts have been affected by the recent floods and landslides. The affected areas are Welipitiya, Elpitiya Yakkalamulla, Wellivitiya, Baddegama, Nagoda, Matugama and Wallallavita. Hettiarchchi said that the floods have subsided and re-construction work has commenced in the 57 Grama Niladari Divisions. Eight deaths were reported from Matara, Elpitiya and Yakkalamulla areas due to persons being swept away and drowning in flood waters. Two persons had drowned in Matara- Wellivitiya areas while six persons from Yakkalamulla are reported to have been swept away by flood waters. Katuwana and Walasmulla were the worst areas affected by landslides during the floods in May this year. Secretary, Social Welfare Ministry Mrs. V. Jegarasasingam referring to the floods in May which completely destroyed 9781 houses and partially damaged 25,225 houses said that her ministry had allocated Rs. 693.9 million through the Divisional Secretariat for reconstruction purposes. |
