Justice with little delay, aim of PCC by Ananth Palakidnar "Justice with little delay, less expenditure and least formalities are the main objectives of the newly established Press Complaints Commission" said Mr. Sam Wijesinghe, Chairman of the Commission. Commenting on the PCC's functions, he told the `Sunday Observer' the press nowadays was a powerful organ. "It can be a ruthless machinery unless it is handled properly," Mr. Wijesinghe said. Commenting further on the commencement of the PCC, the former Secretary General of Parliament Wijesinghe said it was unique in many ways and it was looking forward to mete out justice for the cases that came up before it. He said that the PCC would handle matters related to print media and the organisation could be accessible at any time. Pointing out that the PCC was an evolution of three important media organisations, the Newspaper Society, the Editors' Guild and the Free Media Movement, Wijesinghe said that the co-operation of the media community to stabilise a good media culture in the country through the PCC was vital. Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the PCC, Manique Mendis, told the 'Sunday Observer' that since the inception of the Press Complaints Commission on Wednesday October 15, inquiries about filing complaints were pouring in. "A special booklet is available with an application at the PCC office in Colombo with details and guidelines on how to obtain assistance from the PCC," she said. |
