PM leaves for India today

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will leave on a two-day visit to India tonight. He will meet his counterpart Atal Behari Vajpayee and both leaders will attend the Indo-Lanka Joint Commission meeting to be held in New Delhi.

Premier Wickremesinghe will also brief Mr. Vajpayee on the developments of the peace process. Several senior Indian Ministers will also have discussions with Mr. Wickremesinghe on political, regional security and on the economic co-operation between the two countries.

Mother Teresa's beatification today

Mother Teresa of Calcutta will be beatified today, Mission Sunday, at a special religious ceremony in Rome by Pope John Paul II. The Pontiff who celebrated the Silver Jubilee of His Pontificate on Thursday, October 16, will proclaim to the world that He has the privilege of announcing the beatification of Mother Teresa, the "Humble Maid Servant of God".

The special ceremony to beatify the founder of the Missionaries of Charity which has been serving the "Poorest of the Poor", will be one of the most historical acts of His Pontificate, for, this is the first time the Church announces one beatified within a very short period time of six years.

Hindus appeal against rally

The All Ceylon Hindu Congress has appealed to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga not to proceed with the massive political rally in Colombo, next Friday October 24, as it falls on Deepavali Day, a holy day for Hindus.

In a letter to the President The All Ceylon Hindu Congress General Secretary, Kandiah Neelakandan refers to the planned march entering the city from five directions and later with a massive rally in Colombo. "Several Hindus have requested us to bring their concern to your notice as your Excellency is the leader of the PA and SLFP and we appeal to you not to have any such political protests or rally on Deepavali Day," Neelakandan has further said. Muslim refugees to stage rally in Colombo

Muslims who were evicted from the North in 1990 will stage an awakening rally on Thursday October 23, opposite Fort Railway Station.

These Muslims living in refugee camps in Puttalam, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura and Colombo will take part in the demonstration, organisers said. The rally is aimed at highlighting the ordeal experienced by them in the refugee camps.

Several demands to ameliorate their pathetic conditions are to be put forward at this rally followed by a memorandum to be submitted to the President, Prime Minister and Foreign envoys.

Chamodya needs assistance

Baby M. K. Oshani Chamodya of 4/17, Sri Siddhartha Mawatha, Attidiya is suffering from a heart disease (Telvology of Fallots). Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Aruna Kapuruge has recommended heart surgery at Sri Jayawardenepura General Hospital in order to save her life.

The estimated cost of this surgery is Rs. 175,000. A sum of Rs. 115,000 has already been granted by the President's Fund. A further sum of Rs. 100,000 inclusive of the balance Rs. 60,000 and hospital charges has to be raised. The parents of the child request kind donors to help them save her life. Donations can be made at the Bank of Ceylon, Dehiwala Branch, A/c No. 10051-2213752.
