Men's Futures Tennis championship starts tomorrow

About 70 entries have been received for the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Men's Futures Championship conducted by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) and sponsored by Jembo which starts tomorrow (Monday) at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath with two tournaments to be worked off upto November 2. Each tourney carries prize money worth US Dollars 10,000/=.

This is the second successive year that the ITF has picked SLTA to conduct these tournaments. Last year there were 55 entries.

Japan's Tasuku Iwami is fancied to be accorded the top seed status by virtue of his 293rd ATP ranking - the highest among the entries received. The next best is South Korea's Kim Young Joon, ranked 376th, followed by Jaroslav Pospisil of the Czech Republic.

India, with eight players field the largest contingent, followed by Japan with five, while 15 countries including Great Britain, Sweden, Russia, Spain, France and Thailand too are being represented in Colombo.

The SLTA as hosts have the option of two "wild card" entries and have decided on Renouk Wijemanne and Rajiv Rajapakse, but a host of youngsters are vying for places in the main draw which includes S. Sashivanan, R. Shyamalhan, Kishan Sudasinghe, N. S. Nishendran, D. Wijesuriya, Chathuranga Vidanatchi and C. Algama. Notable absentees are Amrith Rupasinghe who is preparing for examinations, Harshana Godamanne and Rohan de Silva who are to represent Sri Lanka at the Afro-Asian Games to be held from October 23 to November 2 in Hyderabad, India.
