All Thomian team for Asian Age Group rowing meet by LESLIE FERNANDO Four young oarsmen will represent Sri Lanka at the Asian Age Group Rowing Championships conducted by the Asian Amateur Rowing Association from November 13 to 16 at the Singmun River in Hong Kong. The Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka (ARASL) has confirmed Sri Lanka participation at this event, said usman Fatherally, Secretary ARASL. The selection committee of the ARASL, after evaluating the past performances of eligible junior parsmen and taking into consideration performances at the 20th Rowing Nationals picked the team. The four oarsmen are Dejande Soyza, Mahangu Weerasinghe, Dinesh Aluvihare, Isuru Perera all from S. Thomas' College, Mt. Lavinia. They will participate in coxless fours and double sculls. Fatherally said that the four oarsmen train under their respective coaches but with the co-ordination of the national coach Lakmal Wickremage. After the Royal-Thomian Regatta (to be held on October 25) the four oarsmen will directly come under Lakmal Wickremage for special training on the Beira Lake morning and evening sessions from October 26. Besides Sri Lanka, oarsmen from Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Thailand, China, Chinese Taipei, Qatar will participate. Rohan Fernando, former Thomian and Sri Lanka rowing captain and a former President of the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka will be the manager of the team while Lakmal Wickremage will be the coach. He is a former Thomian and has represented Sri Lanka. The six-member team will leave on November 9. |
