Sampath Hemachandra gets a 'double' in golf by JIFFREY ABDEEN - Kandy Sports Corr On a well laid fairway Kandy's young golfer Sampath Hemachandra ran away with a double, winning both the senior and junior competition at the Lectra Monthly medal golf championship organised by the Victoria Golf Club and sponsored by Lectra Apparal Technologies and worked off at the Victoria Golf links in Rajawella, Digana yesterday. Sampath Hemachandra chipped in a neat 66 nett to emerge winner in both junior and senior championships and ran away with a bonus 250 points which will stand in good stead when the Grind Prix is worked off. Sam Gunaratne with 68 points finished runner up. Sally Collins who makes sudden visits to the Victoria Golf Course emerged winner in the women's section netting 72 points which helped her with a bonus of 85 for Grand Prix. Suwen Selvaratnam with 73 points finished a close second with a bonus of 55 and she heads the Lectra Grand Prix race with 265 points gained mostly through her first month win in June when she bagged 180 points. The Junior Championship was won by Sampath Hemachandra with 68 nett with Chamil Wickremasinghe getting a 68 nett as runer-up and Binupa Wijesinghe who leads the Grand Prix race finished with 71` nett but he is way ahead in the race with 550 points. Rudrani Devadas with 24 nett won the nine hole competition and Akhil Rao finished second. The first five placings in the men's competition in this monthly medal is: 1. Sampath Hemachandra 66 nett, 2. Sam Gunaratne 68 nett, 3. A. E. M. Magid 70, 4. Binupa Wijesinghe 71 and Carl Kelaart 72. |
