Killer China quake damages homes of almost 190,000 BEIJING, Saturday (AFP) A powerful earthquake that which shook southwestern China, killing three people and leaving 46 injured, has also damaged the homes of 189,000 people, officials said Saturday. Wang Liping, a government official in Yunnan province's Dayao district said the quake, measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale, which struck late Thursday, had affected more than half the area's 280,000 residents. The Chinese government has announced it will provide 10 million yuan (1.2 million dollars) of aid for the area, according the the official Xinhua news agency. Dayao district, located 180 kilometres (112 miles) northwest of Yunnan's provincial capital Kunming, was struck by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake on July 21 this year, killing 16 people and wounding 60. In total, 15 earthquakes measuring more than 6.0 on the Richter scale have hit Yunnan since 1949, leaving a total of 18,000 dead, according to Xinhua. |
