Leading jeweller's 'Golden Dream'

Pattakannus, one of Sri Lanka's leading goldsmiths, has launched its first jewellery boutique. The jeweller has, until recently, focused on the manufacture of jewellery using precious metals, diamond and gemstones that are made to order for its customer base.

The new direction was heralded with the introduction of a new jewellery range created in conjunction with award winning Sri Lankan designer, Manojani Gooneratne. These fashionable and ethnically motivated classical jewellery keepsakes will be sold at the newly opened 'Golden Dream' boutique in Colombo 3.

Pattakannus is one of the oldest gold stores in Sri Lanka, having been established in 1895 and incorporated as a company in April 1912 with the head office being based in Colombo 13. The company has studied and innovated jewellery design and manufacture since the 1940s when it imported many new, British jewellery making technologies.

In the 1970s, there were further accreditations with the Gemological Association of Great Britain and the Gemological Institute of America. There have also been many innovations in jewellery manufacture over the years due to the introduction of many new technologies such as casting, sand blasting, tumbling and engraving. Pattakannus sends its craftsmen and technicians to Germany and Switzerland for training programmes periodically.

The company's emphasis on innovation and higher quality control has resulted in its jewellery having a gold density higher than stipulated international standards, sources said.

With its new readymade jewellery range, Pattakannus offers customers qualitative pieces that are classical and estate jewellery based concepts with the intention that they would appreciate as heirlooms rather than become trendy faux pas, which are forgotten after one season. The new range incorporates many of the traditional characteristics of Sri Lankan and Pattakannus style, but also has many elements of fusion with other creative styles. The company has also been involved in many social and charitable activities over the years such as hosting free seminars for underprivileged persons interested in the jewellery industry.
