IPM Sri Lanka, President of APFHRM

by Chanuka Mannapperuma

The Institute of Personnel Management (IPM) Sri Lanka has been elected as the President of the Asia Pacific Federation of Human Resource Management (APFHRM) under the leadership of IPM President Janaka Kumarasinghe.

With this appointment, the IPM is now a board member of the World Federation of Personnel Management Associations (WFPMA). This is the first time IPM, Sri Lanka has been elected for this prestigious post in the APFHRM, which comprises 14 member countries in the region. IPM President Janaka Kumarasinghe is due to take over the presidency from Les Picket of Australia soon. This also led Sri Lanka to become a board member of the WFPMA.

"This is a good opportunity as we cannot survive being isolated in this sphere as in other fields. That is why Sri Lanka undertook to organise exchange programmes and accreditations", he said. He is confident that IPM can face these challenges in the future.

Kumarasinghe said many employees in Sri Lanka resort to strikes and protest campaigns to win their demands and this is where the services of HR professionals come into resolve national HR issues.

IPM opened its own premises, a modern HR house at Narahenpita. The institute also runs a Diploma program on personnel management, a qualification much sought after among HR professionals in the country. Kumarasinghe said that they hope to open a new IPM branch in Kandy in the future.

The IPM was established in 1959 and subsequently it was incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1976. With small beginnings in 1959, the institute has developed into a leading Human Resource authority in Sri Lanka. Whilst catering to the needs of the membership, especially with regard to the upgrading of their Knowledge and skills, the institute has conducted a wide range of professional courses including the National Diploma in HRM.

It has also trained quality HR professionals required for the country. HRM has emerged as a separate and distinct discipline like Medicine, Law, Engineering.
