Ignatius Ferdinandez leaves vacuum at St. Joseph's

Golden memories cascade down the years lifting our hearts and minds in humble gratitude to Ignatius Ferdinandez for the unselfish love and dedication extended to St. Joseph's College, Colombo 10. These unforgettable memories go down into the annals of this hallowed institution.

Ignatius Ferdinandez - the refreshing wind that wafted St. Joseph's College in the mid 50's began in his service in the year 1957. He had the honour of working under the guidance of 7 distinguished and conscientious Rectors extending from Rev. Fr. Peter Pillai in 1957 to Rev. Fr. Victor Silva in 2003.

The long succession of 47 years roughly being 5 decades proved to be a period of commitment and dedication holding good moral values inculcated in students now and then and in fact running down generations yet stout and strong.

Being an intellectual and in fact the brother of Vicar General Marcus Ferdinandez, he held important positions in school augmenting from Acting Principal Primary (1974-77) Principal in charge of Upper School (1984-1996) to Deputy Principal Upper School - Administration (1996-2003). During this period he was indeed committed to the profession and the welfare of the school was given top priority.

He clamoured for the formation of the students and this he extended with utmost dedication. It was his humble nature and soft spoken temperament that added dignity and weight to the like. He was approachable at any time unbiased and flexible. He was also meticulous in teaching and this ensured a mark in his career. St. Joseph's College should be proud and fortunate to be associated with dedicated teachers of this calibre.

Ignatius Ferdinandez served the prestigious institution in different capacities and has spear headed many associations.

His dedication as a teacher in charge span many out door activities comprising Karate, Computer, and Wushu Activities - Being the master in charge of discipline a member of the Sports board and the Adversary Board of College he functioned with accuracy and precision.

He was a perfectionist and the Josephians, speak volumes of his personality. With his ready smile and concern for people, he built strength of character in students.

He acted with a deep sense of understanding of his profession and his ability to react with intelligence when the need arose made him indeed a remarkable and exemplary man of distinction. Nevertheless he has in fact represented the College at many International Seminars.

His retirement stands as a loss to the school and students but the traces of moulding he leaves behind span many generations.

This friend, strength and guide now creates a vacuum that is yet left to be filled. We wish him good luck in his retirement and may God Guide him in the years to come.
