by BEVERLEY JANSZ

A change from the colonial age hotels in Nuwara Eliya, Hotel Yenisey has a touch of 'Chinese' in its marvellous architecture - the hard work of Sagara Kodikara and Kamal Dilshan Gunatilleke.

Overlooking two main tourist attractions in 'Little England', the Nuwara Eliya Racecourse and Lake Gregory, Hotel Yenisey has 15 luxury guest rooms, the interior decor of which is a blend of Chinese and British colonial. 'I wanted to divert from the traditional 'colonial' touch which exists in Nuwara Eliya, Chairman/Managing Director, Hotel Yenisey, R.A.D. Lasantha C. Perera said. The 15-room hotel has been artistically designed, with colourful interior decor, and offers all modern facilities.

The restaurant which can accommodate around 250 guests, serves Western, Eastern and Sri Lanka cuisine with emphasis on authentic Chinese culinary delights in line with the Chinese-Colonial concept of the hotel.

Guests at Hotel Yenisey get a rare opportunity of visiting 18 waterfalls in Nuwara Eliya on a two-hour tour organised by the hotel. Among them are the Devon, St. Chairs, Garandi Ella, Ramboda and Pindulu Oya fails, and several others.

The hotel also organises bird-watching outings in and around Nuwara Eliya. Chairman/Managing Director Lasantha Perera said that special offers are being made to Sri Lankans and expatriates to spend a memorable holiday in what is now tagged as Sri Lanka's number one tourist destination, Nuwara Eliya.

Gulf airport - most dynamic in the world

by S.H.A. careem

Gulf airport rank among the most dynamic in the world. While the global airline industry weathers one of the darkest storms in its 100-year history, Middle East aviation is thriving. The regional economy is booming, passenger numbers are soaring and airports from Dubai to Doha are investing heavily to keep pace with rapidly increasing demand. Putting a figure on the level of investment in progress is always difficult, but conservative estimates by industry insiders say it is at least $ 10 billion.

Leading the way is Dubai International Airport, the regions main aviation hub. The airport has had a rolling expansion policy dating back to 1998 which led to the Sheikh Rashid Terminal opening for business in 2000.

That expanded capacity to 20 million passengers a year - but the rapid growth of the traffic to and through Dubai demands further investment. It is a similar pattern, albeit on a smaller scale, in each of the six Gulf co-operation council states.

"Today, the aviation industry has grown to include many diverse aspects" says His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al-Makroum, President of Dubai's Department of Civil Aviation and Chairman of Emirates group.Dubai's International Airport is a case in point. Which began as a simple transport facility is now a thriving broad-based Micro-economy.

Today, the airport includes a five-star hotel, a flower centre, a large expo facility and a free zone that is home to more than 100 of the world's leading companies including house-hold names such as Porsche and Boeing.
