30 + 5 = A Celebration : Mariazelle in Concert Thirty five years in the show biz scene is an excellent reason for celebration. And that's what Mariazelle Goonetilleke is all set for on Wednesday November 26 at the BMICH, when she stages a mega concert for her fans which should not be missed. Her career in music ever since she released 'Kandy Lamissi' has taken her to great heights not only here in Sri Lanka but even on stages abroad. Recently she returned from Dubai and Cyprus where she performed to packed houses. The show titled 30+5 = A Celebration will also see leading lights in action supporting Mariazelle and wishing her further success in her career. Sohan Weerasinghe, Dalreen Suby, Bathiya & Santhush, Piyal Perera, Chandral Fonseka will explode on stage and also the new talent Wathsala Goonetillke, Mariazelle's neice. The music for this celebration will be by the band 'Kings'. What can your fans expect at the celebration? "Well I'm singing a mix of songs at the show. I'm starting the show off with Sinhala pop hits - my own compositions, and then moving into hits that I enjoy singing like 'Kind of Hush', 'Live for Loving You' etc and newer hits from singers like Shania Twain. I'm a country fan too so my fans can expect some country nuggets. I'll be dueting with Sohan as well. We've chosen 'Rala Bindu,' and he's got a surprise when he performs the song he sang when he won the Observer Talent Contest in 1970. Dalreen will be singing one of my songs. Bathiya and Santhush will perform a new duet of theirs and surprises from Piyal Perera and Chandral Fonseka. That's not all. There will be colourful Latin American and Modern Oriental dance routine. The El Latino dancers with Kevin Nugara have worked out an extremely colourful and scintillating dance routine. In Modern Oriental dance idiom there will choreographed sets by Chandana Wickremasinghe, Rajini Selvanayagam and Pradeepa Ariyawansa." Sohan and Mariazelle's friendship goes back to childhood days. "Sohan and I have known each other since we were children as our parents were good friends. As a child of four or five I would watch and listen in awe as the Weerasinghe family played and sang in harmony. It was Sohan's father - Leonard who taught me to play my first Hawaiian guitar and sang 'Kumbaya' with me in harmony. It was also a happy coincidence that Sohan and I entered the 'Observer Talent Search' in 1970 in the Senior and Junior categories, respectively. We won these sections the same night, on the same platform and literally launched our musical careers together." Dalreen Suby has on the other hand been a tremendous source of inspiration and emulation to a young Mariazelle. "During my early singing years with the Junior Rhythmiers and before, since children were not allowed into nightclubs, my father would perch me on top of the ledge of the windowsill of the Coconut Grove at Galle Face Hotel where I sat enthralled watching Mignonne and Dalreen perform. They were my heroines! I am proud to say that it was their influence on me that made me take to the stage", says an enthusiastic Mariazelle. Now the stage is her home. So catch Mariazelle in a gala never-to-be missed celebration concert on Wednesday November 26 at the BMICH. Tickets are available at Torana Music Box, Majestic City and Liberty Plaza. 30+5 = A Celebration is presented by the Three Roses Sports and Welfare Club, Kalubowila, Dehiwala in aid of Ward 16 of the Colombo South National Hospital at Kalubowila. The concert is sponsored by Sunday Observer and Sarasaviya. |
