Weligama Gnanarathana Nayaka Thera and Ven. Prof. Bellanwila Wimalarathana Nayaka Thera, of the University of Sri Jayawardanapura, have welcomed President Chandrika Kumaratunga's call for a government of National Reconstruction and Reconciliation, and urged all political parties to forget their differences and work together for the good of the country. Amarapura Sri Dhammarakkhitha Chapter Mahanayaka Most. Ven. Weligama Gnanarathana Nayaka Thera said the President's invitation for a national government should be appreciated, and added that he had personally urged Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Ministers Karu Jayasuriya and W. J. M. Lokubandara to work together for a national government when they met him last week. Ven. Prof. Bellanwila Wimalarathana Nayaka Thera, Senior Lecturer in University of Sri Jayewardenepura said that the national government concept was acceptable but pointed out that making it a practical step would not be easy because of the country's political set up. However, he said the most suitable thing to do would be for all political parties to come to an agreement and form a national government at least for a year or two, till the country's major problem is solved. Wimalarathana Thera also called for civil organisations to work as pressure groups and for all political parties to work together to find a solution to the national problem. "We are not asking politicians to forget their party politics, but, priority should be given to solve the problem", he added. |
