Carol Aloysius - Best Health Journalist

by factotum

It was a moment of glory for Sunday Observer when senior staffer Carol Aloysius walked up the boarded steps onto the refurbished stage of the Lionel Memorial Auditorium of Australasia's oldest medical association - the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) - to receive SLMA's Best Health Journalist 2003 Award of Excellence in Medical Journalism for investigative coverage in English from a crimson robed SLMA President Dr. Sunil Seneviratne Epa.

The dignity and decorum of the twin occasion of inaugurating the Foundation Sessions and the Awards Ceremony were set when SLMA President and Council members in ceremonial procession took measured steps down the aisle while the audience stood until the mace-bearer in stiff white tunic placed the glittering mace on the high table, office-bearers in colourful gowns took their seats on stage and councillors - all medical men and women - occupied the front rows in the auditorium at Wijerama Mawatha on Friday, Nov. 14.

Former Health Ministers Siva Obeysekera, Dr. Ranjit Atapattu, A.H.M. Fowzie and ex-Health Ministry Secretaries and Directors were among the audience that comprised foreign delegates to the SLMA academic sessions, SLMA members and distinguished invitees.

There was that air of surrealism when, with tulips in the back drop the wings of Dr. Epa's gown flapped as his hands enfolded the glistening plaque and in the halo of the spotlight this advocate of spiritual healing gave away the award to a beaming Carol, the Sinhala award to 'Vidura' journalist Chandra and a Certificate of Merit to 'Thinakaran' staffer Marlin Marikar, the awards covering all three languages.

Carol Aloysius has been in journalism for 33 years throughout on the Observer Editorial. In 1995, she won the Zonta Woman of Achievement Award. An English Honours Graduate of Peradeniya University, Carol holds a fellowship in Journalism from the University of Michigen and Diploma in Journalism from Kamal University, Sweden.
