UNHCR to assist women refugees Welfare facilities for displaced women in the North are to be improved with the assistance of foreign agencies. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has expressed willingness to assist Sri Lanka to implement welfare projects for displaced women in refugee camps and safeguard their rights. The UNHCR is interested in safeguarding the rights of the internally displaced women living in refugee camps in the North, a senior official of the UN office in Colombo told Lankapuvath. He said that the assistance for displaced women should be rapid and well targeted to fulfil their needs. The ethnic conflict has displaced over 100,000 persons the majority of whom are women and children. A new programme has been launched to prevent these women from being subjected to violence and harassment, therefore, branches affiliated to the UNHCR will be opened in every refugee camp in the North. An investigating officer will also be appointed. The first branch office was opened at the Punthottam welfare camp recently. Complaints regarding harassment caused to women in the camp can be lodged at this office. Vavuniya District Secretary K. Ganesh was among those present at the opening of the first branch. |
