Sea plane : Maiden flights from Katunayake to Victoria by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy South Group Corr. Sea Planes or Float Carriers which is the latest promote tourism and improve the mode of transport for tourists made its maiden flight from Katunayake to the Victoria Reservoir in Rajawella on November 12th around 11.30 am watched by a large crowd. This was trial run by the SriLankan Airlines owned Sea Plane before going into the transport of tourists in a big way. From the Victoria reservoir the sea plane flew to Nuwara Eliya to keep its date with the Lake Gregory. This cute looking aircraft with amphibian capabilities first landed on the Victoria reservoir waters and moved close to the golf course of Victoria Golf and Country Resort where coloured barrels had been placed to demarcate the shallow and deep areas. It taxied on the waters up and down a couple of times before taking off to the salubrious hills. British born Secretary of the Victoria golf and country Resort Mrs. Janine Weeratunga said that this successful landing of the sea plane was major breakthrough for the promotion of tourism through sports. It will just take 30 minutes to fly from Katunayake to the Victoria Golf Course and the pier which will be built is close to the club and in fact walking distance. But a road will be cut with the approval to make it motorable from the pier upto the club house. It is unbelievable that the whole journey from the Katunayake international airport to the Victoria golf course would take around 40 minutes which is the time taken from Kandy to the golf course by which is bumpy and if do not get caught to traffic snarls and jams. |
