Ifthar at 'Temple Trees'

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has invited diplomats from Islamic countries, political leaders, Islamic religious personalities and other dignitaries for Ifthar at 'Temple Trees' on Monday November 17.

Karapitiya 'surgeries' from Wednesday

The Cardiothoracic Unit of the Karapitiya General Hospital will resume heart surgeries from Wednesday after a 25-day closure of the unit, which brought to a complete halt to urgent heart surgeries.

The dispute between the consultant doctor and nurses is reported to have been instrumental in the deaths of 20 heart patients, including infants who needed urgent surgical corrections.

Lives of over 2,600 heart patients are still at risk.Health Minister P. Dayaratne told the Sunday Observer that the Ministry was unable to do any thing since it was a dispute between the staff but called for a meeting to resolve the issue.However, the parties would meet the Health Ministry Secretary on Wednesday. -SS

Report out tomorrow

A special report on the recent spate of accidents involving Army and civilian vehicles in the North will be released tomorrow. Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. Lionel Balagalle recently appointed a high level committee to investigate these accidents.

According to a high ranking Army officer, around 20 accidents involving Army and civilian vehicles had been reported during the past six months. While some of the accidents had been major, in most of the incidents, Army vehicles had been damaged by, by-standers. -AN

NE merger to continue

The present North East merger will continue for another year, President Kumaratunga by virtue of the powers vested in her by paragraph (b) of Sub Section (2) of Section 37 of the Provincial Councils Act, No. 42 of 1987, postponed the date of the poll in the Eastern Province to November 17, 2004 and the date of the poll in the Northern Province, December 1, 2004. A gazette to this effect was published on the 6th of November 2003.

The polls for the Northern and Eastern Provinces were to be held later this year on November 17 and December 1, 2003 respectively.

E.L. Ransika an 11-year-old girl from Elledola Para, Dela, Ratnapura needs to undergo early heart surgery of Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital. The surgery is estimated to cost Rs. 350,000. Her parents seek generous assistance from philanthropists, donors and social institutions. Donations can be made to Account No. 1-0010-05-2010-1 Savings Bank, Ratnapura.
