Tamil Tigers changing for better since truce - President COLOMBO, Nov 15 (AFP) - Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels have "changed quite a bit" for the better since a Norwegian-arranged truce went into effect last year, their arch critic President Chandrika Kumaratunga said in remarks published Saturday. "They (the Tigers) have stopped killing, which is already very good," Kumaratunga said in an interview with the Financial Times of London. "I am not saying they haven't changed. They have already changed quite a bit." Kumaratunga said that she would try to patch things up with the prime minister, who revived the peace bid after he defeated her party in 2001 parliamentary polls. Asked if the squabbling between the two main leaders of the Sinhalese majority would help the Tigers, she said: "Probably. But I must say that for the moment they are conducting themselves responsibly." "They are behaving responsibly. I'm told by intelligence people that they are waiting and watching." "It is not peace at the cost of the sovereignty and security of the Sri Lankan nation. "It is peace with security for all. And all the human rights and fundamental rights assured," she said. |
