SLMC urges Indian mediation by P. Krishnaswamy The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has recommended that India be invited to play a facilitatory role in resolving the current political impasse. Secretary General of SLMC, Hassan Ali, told the "Sunday Observer" that party leader, Minister Rauf Hakeem, has already made the recommendation to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. The SLMC's recommendation is based on India's familiarity with the intensity of Sri Lanka's ethnic problem, their desire to see a peaceful end to the 20-year NE conflict. "They should be invited to play a facilitatory role in bringing about conciliation between the two major political parties of the South to resolve the current political crisis", Ali said. He said the SLMC was of the view that the President and the Prime Minister, who are far apart in their national policies, should step down from their rigid stand to make national reconciliation a possibility. Ali also said the SLMC would extend its support to a government of reconciliation if it was based on a clear agenda for peace, and added that all minority political parties should ensure that factor before consenting to support such a government. He also said the SLMC would not support any efforts to reform the existing electoral system. |
