Eleven schools from Jaffna in Elephant Lemonade cricket tourney

by LESLIE FERNANDO

One hundred and seventy one schools, including 11 schools from Jaffna and 10 from Matara District are participating in the Elephant Lemonade Cup Schools Premier Cricket Tournament conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association (SLSCA) and sponsored by Ceylon Cold Stores.

The tournament which started in September 2003 will go on until March 2004. The 171 teams have been divided into three groups, namely Lemonade Group 'A', Lemonade Group 'B' and Lemonade Group 'C'. The Group 'A' will consist of 26 teams, group 'B' 27 teams and group 'C' a record 118 teams which includes 11 teams from Jaffna 10 teams from Matara District. There are 34 new teams that would be taking part for the first time, said R. D. M. Weerathunga, President Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association and the Principal of Thurstan College at a press briefing held at Capri Club on Thursday night.

SLSCA chief Weerathunga said that they greatly appreciate the great contribution made by Ceylon Cold Stores for the promotion of schools cricket. Ceylon Cold Stores have organised several events to boost Sri Lanka school cricketers and they have vouched to continue to sponsor the Schools Premier Cricket Tournament for further five years.

Billy Walpola, Director, Ceylon Cold Stores said that it's going to be long marriage between Ceylon Cold Stores and Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association. "The SLSCA organised the previous tournaments with a lot of devotion and dedication and even the awards ceremony held at the BMICH 2003 was well handled by them. Our aim is to complete its continuity and contribute to promote schools cricket in a big way", added Walpola. He also said that Ceylon Cold Stores will also sponsor the popular six-a-side cricket tournament for the 11th year in succession next year.

B. S. Perera, Secretary SLSCA said that altogether 885 matches will be played in all three groups on a league basis. After the league tournament, the best 32 teams will be selected for the Elephant Cup Limited-Over Tournament.

The SLSCA will not be selecting the Best Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year as it will lead to lot of unwanted problems and even the best fielder in all three groups will not be selected. But the best batsman, best bowler and best allrounder will be selected from all three groups and trophies will be presented. The highest aggregate on all three awards will be taken into account. The best batsman may not get the nod if he doesn't get the higher aggregate.

Last year Royal College became champions in the Group 'A' and St. Sebastian's College runners-up. Group 'B' - President's College Kotte (champions), Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa (runners-up). Group 'C' St. Thomas' College Matara (champions), Holy Cross College Kalutara (runners-up).

Revatha MV from Balapitiya who fared well in the 2002 tournament have been promoted to Group 'A'. Meanwhile Rahula College Matara have been promoted to Group 'B'.

De Mazenod College Kandana, St. Anthony's College Wattala and Mahanama College have been demoted to Group C.
